October was in the air and Moses was enjoying the colder weather. The girls were still happy to be outside, which made things easier to let their energy out. School was so far decent in the new year. But he was worried when another foster placement was asked about. Moses had asked Isa and Julia, of course, but he had them for a long time now. It was to the point that Moses had plans of adoption but wanted to wait a bit before asking their thoughts on the idea. He also didn’t want to prevent another family from having children.
Moses, after talking with his family, came up with the idea that the kids could have a playdate. Dahlia, his sister, agreed to come and be an extra adult pair of eyes. There was a nice park on their street that had a good playground, as well as a natural kind of playground. Moses wasn’t afraid of the kids getting dirty anyway.
After making sure he and the girls were dressed for the cooler weather, he grabbed a wagon so the girls could sit in it. The park wasn’t too long of a walk – but Moses knew it’d be easier to have it in case the girls got too tired. Plus, it was a good workout for him later.
When they made it to the park, Dahlia was there – warm drinks in hand and a wicker basket. A woman, around Moses’ age was talking to his sister. The woman had a young boy with her, whom Moses guessed was the young boy. “Good afternoon!” Moses smiled. “I hope I didn’t keep you waiting too long.” Moses gave the woman a firm handshake. “These are my girls, Julia and Isa.”
Isa had been in the foster system for a couple of years now, so in her opinion, she was an old hand at this, and the inclusion of another foster child in the mix wouldn't change anything. After all, this place wasn't like the halfway house was in in last, and while there were rules, she imagined that it would be what her home would have been like, if her and her parents hadn't spent most of their life on the road, in a horse truck.
As they got ready to go out, Isa remained quiet as they pulled on their warm clothes. She knew it was pointless trying to tell adults that she didn't need to dress as warmly as others, as she worked up her own heat when moving, so she was normally the first to start shedding clothes, as she worked up a sweat a lot faster. She gave the wagon the same look of loathing as she gave her wheelchair and created more space between herself and it.
"What do you think the new kid will be like?" She asked Julia as she swung in step beside her sister as they made their way toward the park, and then quickly looked down to make sure that her shoes matched, as she knew she had changed the one on her normal foot and was having doubts about the other, and nodded with a smile as she saw that yes, she was wearing a matching pair of walking shoes.
She offered Dahlia a smile, but remained in the background as Moses greeted the adults, taking this time to study the small boy standing with the unknown woman, her smile brightened when she heard her name and she removed her right hand from her crutch long enough to give a small wave before taking hold of it again.
Although Joey had been in the foster system for his entire five years of life, and had experienced a lot in that small amount of time, there was still a lot that he hadn't experienced, and a lot of those things had been experienced by other children, although that was only a fact, it wasn't on his five year old mind. What was on his mind was how nervous he was to meet this man that his social worker called "Moses" and the two girls he fostered named "Julia" and "Isa". Normally Joey was a really outgoing kid, he liked to make new friends and meet new people, but the circumstances surrounding the meeting had to be just right and right now, he wasn't feeling very confident. He looked up at his worker with a worried face, she looked down at him and gave him a smile, as well as a comforting squeeze of his hand. He knew she was trying to tell him not to worry, but he was still feeling nervous.
A woman named Dahlia had come up to meet him. she had said that she was Moses' sister and Joey wondered why she was there too, did she help him look after the kids he had? He shrugged his shoulder to himself and brought his hand up to nibble on one of his nails, a nervous habit he had developed in his current foster home. Soon a tall man with two little girls came up the path and Joey couldn't help but shuffle to hide behind his worker. He peeked out and caught the man smiling, as he introduced them all, the girl called Isa waved at him and he ducked into hiding again, feeling both foolish and nervous all in one. A memory came up, one of his other foster siblings telling him that people wouldn't like him if he acted like a baby. He frowned and stuck his hand out, giving a small wave to whoever was watching.
